NATION COMMEMORATES END OF FIRST PH REPUBLIC IN PALANAN, ISABELA

The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), with the Municipal Government of Palanan, Isabela; commemorated the 125th anniversary of the End of the First Philippine Republic with a simple program at the Aguinaldo Capture Marker in Palanan, Isabela on Monday, 23 March 2026.
Isabela 2nd District Representative Ed Christopher S. Go served as the Guest of Honor and was joined by NHCP Chair Regalado Trota Jose, Jr., Palanan Mayor Angelo A. Bernardo, Vice Mayor Elizabeth B. Ochoa, Duty Officer Venus B. Malabonga of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines, and other local officials. The wreath-laying was facilitated by the Philippine Army.

The event remembers the climactic capture of President Emilio Aguinaldo by United States Army forces through deception in the hinterlands of Palanan, Isabela on the Sierra Madre mountain range. Following the establishment of the First Philippine Republic on 23 January 1899, the young republic was forced into a war of survival with the outbreak of the Philippine-American War in February 1899. Faced with superior firepower and logistics, Filipino republican forces began a strategic retreat into the mountains of Northern Luzon where Aguinaldo and his party endured a forced march into the Cordillera and Sierra Madre mountain ranges to evade pursuing US forces while governing the nationwide resistance against the new occupiers. After two years of successful evasion, Aguinaldo was caught by American-affiliated Filipino scouts and US soldiers in his headquarters by posing as republican soldiers with American prisoners. The capture, which occurred on 23 March 1901, is considered as the definitive end of the First Philippine Republic. However, other resistance leaders, including Miguel Malvar and Vicente Lukban, continued to operate against US forces into 1902, while the Moro people of Mindanao waged a war of resistance against the American occupiers well into the 1910s.

With this activity, the 125th Anniversary of Philippine Independence and Nationhood end its formal commemorative programs. However, academic and public programs will continue into the rest of 2026.
